What is Issio Solutions?
What is Issio Solutions?

Issio Solutions is a healthcare workforce optimization platform.

Nurses and other staff at VA hospitals use it to schedule and track hours worked.

Tracking staff hours accurately is critical to meeting the government-required Nursing Hours per Patient Day (NHPPD).

Why schedule validation important?
Why schedule validation important?

Charge Nurses must notify Nurse Managers of staff scheduling changes during shifts for NHPPD compliance.

The Problem

The Problem

The current method of validating schedule changes is inefficient and can lead to mistakes.

The current method of validating schedule changes is inefficient and can lead to mistakes.

It is a manual process that involves printing a schedule, crossing out shifts, handwriting changes, and finding a Nurse Manager to physically hand it to.

My responsibility
My responsibility

Enable Charge Nurses to validate schedules directly within Issio's scheduling platform, which they already use for other tasks.

The feature should be accessible from an existing screen.

I need to use the existing design system and write the copy.

Charge Nurses can validate the entire shift band without seeing each individual change.

Based on feedback, I redesigned the modal to hide details behind a collapsible chevron and adjusted the color coding. Pending validation statuses are now yellow, signaling caution and contrasting with the blue brand colors.

Feedback was positive.

The team agreed it was ready for development.

But wait!

Charge Nurses are tired.

Validating a schedule cannot be undone.

Maybe one click is too easy?

I added a confirmation modal to give Charge Nurses pause to be sure this is the action they want to take. We should also let them know that the action cannot be undone. See the entire flow below.

Results

Stakeholders estimated this will save Charge Nurses 10-15 minutes at the end of every shift. This time can be used for patient care.

What would I do differently?
What would I do differently?

There are color contrast issues that do not meet WCAG standards in the legacy design system. I brought these issues up with the team and we were going to address them in an upcoming rebrand.
